By Kander and Ebb

Set just before Hitler's rise to power in the tumultuous city of Berlin, Cabaret paints the picture of a world on the brink of change through the eyes of some of Berlin's lowest and liveliest characters. The audience is welcomed into the Kit Kat Klub, a seedy Cabaret in the underworld of Berlin, by a mysterious Emcee telling them to abandon their troubles. Outside of the Cabaret we meet Sally Bowles, a performer at the Kit Kat Klub and Clifford Bradshaw, an American writer visiting Germany for inspiration. They fall for each other and become caught up in the decadent nightlife of Berlin. The stories of Cliff, Sally and those around them are woven together with performances in the Cabaret, as they try to embrace a hopeful future in Berlin. Yet all is not well, for as the shadow of the Third Reich grows over Germany, Sally, Cliff and the other characters that we meet are forced to abandon their lives and accept the dark new reality of Hitler's Germany.
